This summary provides a brief explanation of the main gemstone families that we work with on a daily basis in our Bijotuerie. Please note that diamonds are dealt with in a separate article due to their importance and uniqueness.

Corundum

Corundum is a gemstone family that includes sapphires and rubies. These gemstones consist mainly of aluminum oxide and are the hardest natural minerals after diamonds. Rubies are characterized by their red color, which is caused by chromium, while sapphires come in a variety of colors, most famously blue, but also yellow, green and pink.

  • Hardness: 9 on the Mohs scale, the second hardest mineral after diamond;
  • Known varieties: sapphire (different colors) and ruby (red);
  • Month stone: Ruby is the birthstone for July, sapphire for September;
  • Reputed effects: Ruby is said to promote vitality and energy, sapphire clarity and wisdom.

Spinels

Spinels are gemstones composed of magnesium aluminate and often come in a variety of colors, including red, blue, green and black. They have a refractive index of 1.718 and a hardness grade of 8 on the Mohs scale, making them a robust and attractive choice for jewelry. They are relatively rare gemstones and are often found in the same regions as rubies and sapphires, which has meant that historically they have often been confused with them. Their rarity and variety of colors make them particularly desirable and valuable on the gemstone market.

  • Hardness grade: 8 on the Mohs scale, which makes them robust and resistant to scratches.
  • Known varieties: Spinels come in a variety of colors, including red (sometimes referred to as "flame spinel"), blue, green, purple and black.
  • Month stone: Spinel is often considered an alternative birthstone for the month of August.
  • Alleged effects: Spinels are said to promote stability and balance, as well as strengthen vitality and determination.

Tourmaline

Tourmaline is a complex gemstone family known for its wide range of colors. These gemstones consist of a crystal mixture of silicates and can occur in almost any color, often even multicolored. Popular varieties include green verdelite, blue indigolite and multicolored watermelon tourmaline, which has green and pink zones.

  • Degree of hardness: 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale;
  • Known varieties: Verdelite (green), indigolite (blue), watermelon tourmaline (multicolored);
  • Month stone: Opal and tourmaline are birthstones for October;
  • Alleged effects: Tourmaline is said to protect the body from negative energies and promote creativity.

Beryl

Beryl includes some of the most well-known gemstones such as emerald, aquamarine, morganite and heliodor. These gemstones are mainly composed of beryllium aluminum silicate. Emeralds are known for their intense green color, which is caused by chromium and vanadium. Aquamarines have a blue-green to sky-blue color, while morganite is pink to salmon-colored and heliodor shines in golden-yellow tones.

  • Degree of hardness: 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale;
  • Known varieties: emerald (green), aquamarine (blue), morganite (pink), heliodor (yellow);
  • Month stone: Emerald is the birthstone for May, aquamarine for March;
  • Reputed effects: Emerald is said to strengthen love and hope, aquamarine to bring serenity and clarity.

Garnet

Garnets are a group of silicate minerals that occur in a variety of colors. The best-known types of garnet are pyrope (red), almandine (red-violet), spessartine (orange), grossular (green to yellow) and andradite (green). Garnets are known for their brilliant variety of colors and their very high light refraction, which gives them a luminous appearance.

  • Degree of hardness: 6.5-7.5 on the Mohs scale;
  • Known varieties: Pyrope (red), Almandine (red-violet), Spessartine (orange), Grossular (green);
  • Month stone: Garnet is the birthstone for January;

Organic gemstones

Organic gemstones include materials that are produced by living organisms or are fossil remains. The most important of these include

  • Pearls: Pearls are formed in oysters and other shellfish by the deposition of calcium carbonate in concentric layers. They are prized for their natural beauty and luster and come in a variety of colors, from white to pink to black.
  • Corals: Corals consist of the skeletal remains of marine coral polyps. They are usually found in red to pink shades and have been used as jewelry since ancient times.
  • Petrified: Petrified materials are fossilized remains of plants or animals that have been replaced by mineral deposits. Fossilized wood and fossilized shells are examples of such gemstones that fascinate with their unique texture and colouring.
